Hernández late winner sends Alajuelense to Quarterfinals

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica — The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continued with Liga Deportiva Alajuelense earning a 1-nil win against Antigua GFC in Group A on Wednesday at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Kenyel Michel had a good opportunity for Alajuelense to pull ahead in the 18’, but his shot from the right end of the box was just wide and hit the side netting.
Óscar Castellanos came close for Antigua with a long-range hit in the 27’, but his shot was met by a save from Alajuelense goalkeeper Washington Ortega.
Anthony Hernández scored the winner for Alajuelense in the 83’, sending the ball to the back of the net with a header off a precise cross from John Ruiz.
Ortega ended the match with four saves to collect his second consecutive clean sheet in the tournament.
With the victory, defending champions LD Alajuelense secured its berth in the Quarterfinals as second place in Group A with a 3-0-1 record and nine points.
Antigua finished third in the group with four points and a 1-1-2 record, concluding its participation in the 2025 edition.
