William Gallas has claimed Robert Sanchez doesn’t have the quality to be Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper, and the sporting directors are to blame for signing him.

Sanchez arrived from Brighton in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £25m and started last season as Chelsea’s first choice after the departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga to Real Madrid.

The Spain international started well, but things quickly took a turn and he started to make a number of mistakes, before losing his place to Djordje Petrovic through injury.

Gallas slams Sanchez

Sanchez was confirmed as Chelsea’s number one for this season despite the signing of Filip Jorgensen, whilst Petrovic was sent on loan to Strasbourg.

The Spaniard has put in some good performances and made some vital saves, but he’s been his usual error prone self throughout the campaign.

No goalkeeper has made more mistakes leading to goals in the league this season, whilst he was booed by Chelsea fans for his error in the defeat to Manchester City last month.

Enzo Maresca took the decision to drop Sanchez for Monday night’s win against West Ham, and Gallas believes he doesn’t have the quality to be Chelsea’s number one, whilst blaming the sporting directors for signing him.

“Goalkeeper errors, that is always a problem,” he said as cited on X.com.

“Unfortunately for Robert Sanchez, he makes some big mistakes, and he makes them too often.

“It’s easy to blame the player, but I think Chelsea fans have to blame the sporting director. They have to blame the people who brought him in.

“He doesn’t have the level to be the number one goalkeeper for Chelsea. When you play for a big club like this, you need to have that level. Sadly, he doesn’t have it.”

It will be interesting to see if Sanchez plays in the FA Cup tie against Brighton on Saturday evening, but it appears he’s now the second choice keeper.
