Marta had hoped to go out with a bang from international football but definitely not like this.

The Brazil captain is set to bring the curtain down on a sparkling career on the global stage following her involvement in the Olympics.

But Marta’s swansong may have been cut short after she was sent off shortly before half time in Wednesday’s Group C encounter with Spain.

The 38-year-old received a straight red card for a high-footed lunge that caught La Roja’s World Cup-winning hero Olga Carmona in the head.
