Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott will wear the club’s number 19 shirt from 2022/23 onwards, explaining that being inspired by ex-Reds star Sadio Mane is a major factor in his decision.

Elliott has worn 67 since arriving at Anfield from Fulham in 2019, having established himself in the first-team in 2021/22 following a successful loan at Blackburn.

The teenager lost a considerable amount of game time because of a horror ankle injury but fans will hope to see much more of him next season after gradually returning to fitness.

"Obviously the number [19] became available, some great players have worn it in the past – the likes of Sadio and the list goes on,” Elliott told LiverpoolFC.com.

Mane, who has now joined Bayern Munich, wore the digits when he first joined the club from Southampton in 2016, eventually going on to take the number 10 jersey.

"I think it was an opportunity to get down the ranks in terms of the numbers, and for me personally it's a wonderful number,” the player added.

"I remember having a Sadio shirt with the number 19 on it as a kid. So to be able to wear it after him, it's a great pleasure. At the end of the day, a number is just a number, but it's just nice to have a lower number. I think it's a great opportunity going into another season.

"So, hopefully I can prove to myself and prove to everyone that I'm able to have these kind of numbers and able to perform under this kind of pressure, because it comes with it.
