Harry Maguire has endured a tough start to the season at Manchester United but he has been able to escape some of the scrutiny – definitely not all of it – by joining England in their final World Cup rehearsal.

Maguire started against Italy last week but could not stop his side from losing the repeat of last year’s European Championship, with Giacomo Raspadori’s sublime strike separating the nations.

The United captain was not at fault for the goal and handled the occasion well, especially considering how intensely he has been scrutinised over the last 12 months.

It was, however, a disastrous result for England as they have now been relegated from their UEFA Nations League group. They will be given the chance to save face on Monday evening, however, with Germany making the trip to Wembley Stadium.

According to Sky Sports, Maguire is expected to keep his place for the game against Germany, with Manchester City defender John Stones set to partner him.

Southgate’s latest vote of confidence will be a huge boost to Maguire, who will be desperate to seal a seat on the plane to Qatar in November.

SN’s verdict… It can’t be forgotten that Maguire has been an integral player for England in both of their last tournaments, with his involvement in the Euro’s last summer in particular.

In truth, he is unlikely to play regularly at United before the season is put to a halt by the mid-season World Cup and he needs minutes under his belt for England.

Southgate’s decision is understandable and Ten Hag will also be appreciating it, even if he is seemingly set on the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
