Birmingham City defender Harlee Dean has admitted he was in “quite a lonely place” at the club for a long period of time following his goal against Stoke City at the weekend.

Dean left Blues back in January to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan, with his Birmingham City career looking over after comments from former boss Lee Bowyer.

However, despite expecting to leave the club this summer, with John Eustace now in charge at St Andrews, Dean has instead been slowly re-integrated into the squad after a move away never materialised.

The central defender made his Blues league debut for the season against Bristol City early last month, and has impressed to the point that he has started at the back in every match since.

Reflecting on his situation at the club, Dean made an exciting and confident claim, whilst opening up on how he had felt at times during his struggles.

“To be honest I still feel like I have got more to come.” the 31-year-old said, via BirminghamLive.

“I spoke to the gaffer and this is my first run of games in six months through injuries and stuff like that.

“I am still getting back to where I need to be, where I can be.

“At the same time it has been brilliant, I have enjoyed every minute of it, being back with the lads and amongst it because it was quite a lonely place for a long period of time.

“I just want to keep going.”

Blues next face Swansea City in Championship action this evening where Dean will expect to make his eighth league outing of the season.

Birmingham head into the fixture sitting 11th in the league standings.

The Verdict

What a turn around it has been for Harlee Dean at Birmingham City.

Under Lee Bowyer, it looked like his Blues career was over, but after a move away didn’t arrive, Eustace has made the most of what he has at his disposal in integrating the 31-year-old back into the side.

That is looking a really good decision by the Blues boss, who continues to get things right so far this season.

With Dean claiming there is more to come, it’s an exciting proposition for Birmingham City given he has already come in and looked good at the back for the club so far.
