To say Erling Haaland has hit the ground running at Manchester City would be something of an understatement.
The Norwegian striker has taken the Premier League by storm. He’s scored 11 goals in his first seven matches, recording hat-tricks against both Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest in the process.
No player in Europe’s top five leagues has found the back of the net more times than Haaland so far in 2022/23. Yes, that includes the in-form Neymar and Robert Lewandowski.
Haaland’s numbers are just incredible. In fact, they’re so good that at the time of writing, only four men have scored more Premier League goals in 2022 than him.
The former Borussia Dortmund man’s haul of 11 is more than Cristiano Ronaldo (10 in 22), Mohamed Salah (10 in 21) and Gabriel Jesus (10 in 19).
Madness, right?
So, let’s take a look at the leading Premier League goal-getters this calendar year…
Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) – 7 goals
Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton) – 7 goals
Richarlison (Everton/Tottenham) – 7 goals
Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham) – 7 goals
Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) – 7 goals
Yoane Wissa (Brentford) – 7 goals
Luis Diaz (Liverpool) – 7 goals
Kai Havertz (Chelsea) – 7 goals
Rodrigo Moreno (Leeds) – 8 goals
Jack Harrison (Leeds) – 9 goals
Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) – 9 goals
Sadio Mane (Liverpool) – 9 goals
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City/Chelsea) – 9 goals
James Maddison (Leicester) – 10 goals
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) – 10 goals
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – 10 goals
Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City/Arsenal) – 10 goals
Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – 11 goals
Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 11 goals
Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) – 13 goals
Ivan Toney (Brentford) – 13 goals
Heung-min Son (Tottenham) – 18 goals
Harry Kane (Tottenham) – 19 goals
Haaland should not be that high up the list, but we’re talking about a man who may very well be a footballing cyborg.
Kane’s record is also mighty impressive and it feels like the form of Spurs’ talisman has slightly slipped under the radar of late.
Sure, he’s not hit double figures in the Premier League this season yet (he’s currently on six goals), but the man who will soon be England’s record goalscorer has been the hallmark of consistency throughout 2022.
There’s a case to be made that Haaland and Kane are currently the two best out-and-out strikers on the planet, although that may be doing Lewandowski and Karim Benzema a disservice.
