Atlético, of course, are primed to return to action on Wednesday night.

Fresh off a disappointing 2-2 stalemate with bottom of the table Almería in La Liga at the weekend, the Rojiblancos will turn their attentions back towards the club’s pursuit of silverware, in the 2nd leg of a Copa del Rey semi-final tie with Athletic Club.

Trailing 1-0 after the first leg in the Basque Country, Atléti boss Simeone, for obvious reasons, will be hopeful of having as many of his star performers as possible fit and available to feature from the off at the Wanda Metropolitano.

As confirmed by the aforementioned MD, however, several such players look all but certain to miss out.

Citing developments in the club’s latest training session on Monday, all of José María Giménez, Thomas Lemar, and César Azpilicueta, as expected, remain out of action.

Star frontman Antoine Griezmann, meanwhile, is also yet to recover, though it was always considered a long shot that the Frenchman would play any part on Wednesday.

And a surprise absence from Atlético training on Monday, too, was Marcos Llorente.

The versatile Llorente was put through an individualised session away from the rest of Simeone’s squad, with an explanation for as much yet to be provided.

It is assured, though, that ‘he should have no problems playing against Athletic if Simeone considers it appropriate’.
