Fernando Ortiz struggled to fight back the tears after América achieved a dramatic win at Necaxa on Saturday, just days after the death of the manager’s mother.
The Azulcrema seemed set to earn just a point at the Estadio Victoria until the first minute of stoppage time when Los Rayos goalkeeper Luis Malagón barely repelled a Richard Sánchez free-kick.
Diego Valdés was on the spot to bury the rebound and secure a vital three points for Las Águilas in their push for a Clausura play-off spot.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Ortiz became understandably emotional.
“I promised myself not to break but sometimes it is inevitable,” the Argentine said.
“I have found in my players, in my family, although losing a mother and being far away, like any child, hurts a lot, but happy that she is happy upstairs because I do what makes me happy.
“I have nothing but words of gratitude. I find a deep pain that is difficult to express. I am very grateful to my players and the people around me.”
A second consecutive win saw América move up to 13th place, one spot outside the play-off positions.
