Granit Xhaka has told Bayer Leverkusen he wants to join Sunderland this summer (h/t The Athletic).
Talks are ongoing between both clubs, but Xhaka has reached an agreement on personal terms with the newly promoted Premier League club.
The 32-year-old midfielder is now waiting for the two clubs to agree a deal and is fully committed to securing a move to the Stadium of Light.
The Swiss international is under contract at Leverkusen until 2028, but he is eager to return to English football.
Xhaka has attracted interest from Neom SC and AC Milan this summer, but Sunderland is his preferred destination.
Xhaka has been a key figure for Leverkusen since his move to Germany, making 99 appearances in just two seasons at the club.
He played a vital role in helping Leverkusen lift their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 campaign.
The Swiss captain’s performances helped bring stability and control to Leverkusen’s midfield during their historic league-winning run.
Xhaka previously spent seven seasons at Arsenal, where he became a regular starter under multiple managers.
He played 297 matches for the Gunners and won two FA Cups in 2016-17 and 2019-20.
Xhaka would bring a wealth of experience, leadership and top-level quality to Sunderland if he signs for them.
He is comfortable playing as a defensive midfielder but also has the vision and power to contribute in attacking areas.
Sunderland have signed several players this summer, including Habib Diarra, Reinildo, Simon Adingra, Chemsdine Talbi and Noah Sadiki.
Their recruitment shows clear intent, and signing Xhaka would be another statement of ambition as they prepare for the new season.
