Graeme Souness’ return to Rangers could be back on

We’ve been hearing a little on the wire of some interest again in Graeme Souness as chief advisor to Rangers.

Souness has expressed in the past on his current TalkSport gig that ‘that ship has sailed’ but with Rangers currently incredibly rudderless, there are a few murmurs that bringing Souness in for his counsel might not be the worst idea.

Unfortunately for the ex-Rangers player/manager, some of the things he’s said in the press via his radio platform have been a touch misguided, even if time may have proven him to be a bit less wrong than he seemed when he said them.

The big one is of course his steadfast belief that Frank Lampard was the best choice for Rangers, especially saying so after Philippe Clement was appointed.

After the Belgian’s brilliant start, Souness started looking very misguided for sticking to his guns about the Chelsea legend, and Ibrox Noise and others were extremely critical of him.

But we must admit Clement’s stark deterioration in the role coupled with Souness’ (eventual) reasoning that Lampard would understand the Glasgow goldfish bowl and West of Scotland football vibe better now does seem to make a bit more sense, because Clement sure doesn’t get it.

So is Souness up for his big return?

He said it’s in the past, but that was with the former board, which was of course Bisgrove and Bennett – things are different now and while Rangers have no leaders, there’s definitely scope to bring him in.

Naturally Rangers did bring in an ‘advisor’ in the form of George Letham, but in truth, a Souness he isn’t and he’s just a businessman Rangers fan with shares, who has been elevated probably a bit higher than his own station.

We haven’t suddenly decided Souness is wisdom personified, but we do admit he’s not as wrong as he originally looked, and he does only have Rangers’ best interests at heart.

Whether the club would now want him back is another matter.
