If the speculation doing the rounds in the media is accurate than there is expected to be a takeover of the Rangers soon. Of course, the rumours have renewed the hopes of the Ibrox supporters, who have grown tired of seeing their side finish second-best to Celtic consistently. But will anything change in the future?

Of course, there seems to be a belief that a takeover would automatically lead to success for the Rangers. Reality might not be as straightforward.

It is not that the Rangers have not been spending money. Almost every year, the club has posted significant losses. On the other hand, the picture has been very different for Celtic, who appear to post record revenues and profits pretty much every season.

So, while there is a gulf between the finances of the two clubs, the gap is not that significant when it comes to their spending in recent years. The problems might lie deeper.

As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Graeme Souness told PLZ Soccer:

"Very different story, it’s a very different club to the one I worked at.“We had lots of funds to work with. Rangers haven’t had that in their recent history, and hopefully, that should be about to change.“I obviously want to see Rangers be successful. I think, if someone came in and had the financial capability to go out and buy better players, that can only be good news. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it would be good news."

It remains to be seen how things turn out for the Rangers and their supposed upcoming takeover. But if anyone is expecting them to close down the gap immediately, they might end up getting a wake-up call.

As for Celtic, there is not too much reason for them to worry about at the moment. Even if the Rangers do end up spending more in the future, the Hoops are in a strong enough financial position to keep up with them.

For now, their focus has to be on continuing to build on their success. Another domestic treble could be on the cards. But this season, the progress in Europe from the Hoops was just as exciting and the fans are hoping for more in Europe moving forward.
