The early Christmas and Hanukkah gifts keep on coming for NJ/NY Gotham FC fans. On Tuesday, the Bats announced they signed Stella Nyamekye to a three-year contract, with an option for another year. They acquired her from Dreamz Ladies FC for an unknown fee.
Nyamekye joins Jaelin Howell and Sarah Schupansky as the newest Gotham FC players. All three were signed or traded for in the last week, while Mandy Freeman was the first free agent brought back to New Jersey. Of course, more signings are expected, but the club has finally begun building for 2025.
The Bats have signed a talented player with the addition of Nyamekye. The Ghanaian joins the club after spending her first few professional years in her home country of Ghana. Her growth over the past year, especially her performances in the U-20 World Cup with Ghana, has put her on the map. As a result, it is not shocking Gotham FC went after the midfielder. General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West expressed that to gothamfc.com.
"Stella is an exciting player and her ceiling is very high," she told the team's website. "Her success this past year has been fantastic and we are happy to have her here in NJ/NY."
As mentioned, Nyamekye played well at the U-20 World Cup. She scored two goals and had an assist, shining for the young Ghana side despite their elimination after the group stage. This illuminated her potential and how she does well in the attack.
Hence, Gotham FC will have another goal-scorer on the roster. Nyamekye has 26 goals since beginning her time with Dreamz in 2021. There is no question she has the potential to do well in the NWSL, especially when one watches her maneuver on the pitch. If she develops properly, she could also become a star.
The footballing ingredients are there for Nyamekye to become a great player. At the same time, with Gotham's attacking talent in the final third and attacking midfield, one can assume this year's focus will be on improving the player's skills and helping her adjust to a new league and country. Nyamekye is just 19, so there is a lot of growth yet to be seen.
Nevertheless, she is an exciting signing for Gotham FC. Supporters should look forward to seeing her play at Red Bull Arena.
