The NWSL break is almost here, and NJ/NY Gotham FC and the rest of the league have one more game left before they are off for over a month. Thankfully, the Bats will enter the final match with a win behind them. They finally ended the four-game winless streak after they defeated Utah Royals FC 3-0.
Ideally, they will get their second win in a row when they take on Bay FC this weekend. Until then, here is a Gotham FC news roundup.
Gotham FC played well for most of the match against Utah, and that was due to the offense. But the defense did well, too, including Ann-Katrin Berger. The goalkeeper had three saves during the game.
One of those saves was nominated for Save of the Week, and guess what? She won! The save that took the crown was the 25th-minute save that kept Utah off the board and the Bats in front 1-0 at the time. Berger used her left foot to stop the ball from heading into the goal. Lilly Reale closing down next to her helped, but if the German had not made contact, then she would not have earned the clean sheet.
Sports fans love it when teams host a game that allows them to bring their dogs with them. This season, Gotham FC has announced their Dog Days of Summer match at Sports Illustrated Stadium. Supporters can take their dogs with them to the August 23 game when the team hosts the Utah Royals.
Per the club, fans must buy a Gotham FC Furry Companion ticket that will be for the human and the pup. Anyone with a dog will be in Section 122, so spots will likely be limited. More importantly, anyone who plans on attending the match with their dog must fill out a form to show the dog's vaccinations are up to date, and he or she can attend.
On Tuesday, some Gotham FC players attended the New York Liberty's game against the Atlanta Dream. Players like Berger, Mandy Freeman, Nealy Martin, and more watched the reigning champions win 86-81. The basketball team came back to win by outscoring the Dream 26 to 13 in the fourth quarter.
It was good that Gotham had a night out to have some fun. Now, their attention must turn to this weekend's game.
