Sunday started as being touted as a big day for transfers in England, with Liverpool hinted to be heavily involved as certain clubs desperately attempted to meet Premier League spending rules.

The likes of Chelsea, Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are all potentially in breach of the rules and need to sell players in order to meet them.

As a result, Fabrizio Romano revealed in his Daily Briefing via GIVEMESPORT that, as things stand, Liverpool are not expected to meet Newcastle’s demands to sign Gordon which means a move is unlikely to happen ahead of the PSR deadline.

The journalist goes on to explain that the Merseyside giants will need to present a 'crazy' proposal in order to land the England international, as a deal for the forward never reached an advanced stage due to the huge gap in valuations between both clubs.

"I think he has still got a chance at Liverpool to be a proper centre-half. He has got a big future, and I think Liverpool understand that as well."

Elanga pursuit could still open the door

As per Sky Sports, Newcastle have opened talks with Nottingham Forest over a deal for Anthony Elanga.

Given the Anthony Gordon to Liverpool links, naturally it may come across that Newcastle have identified the perfect replacement should the 23-year-old make a sensational return to Merseyside.

Perhaps the door to a move to Anfield is still open after all.
