The midfielder’s first half penalty sealed all three points for the Clarets at Turf Moor midweek.

The result saw the team move into the automatic promotion places, taking advantage of West Brom’s 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Burnley have now won three of their four home games so far this season, drawing the other, as they chase promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Brownhill now has four goals to his name for the campaign, as well as one assist, having started all eight of their league games in total (all stats from Fbref).

Brownhill has posted to social media a message to supporters after scoring a crucial winner in their pursuit of a top two finish this season.

His message celebrates the three points earned against the Pilgrims, while looking forward to their upcoming clash with Lancashire rivals Preston North End.

“Good morning, 3 points, victory at turf, nice,” wrote Brownhill, via Instagram.

“See you Saturday.”

Brownhill has been a key figure for Burnley since making the switch from Bristol City in January 2020.

The midfielder has made 111 appearances for the club in the Premier League, as well as playing 41 times in their promotion season in the Championship under Vincent Kompany.

The club captain has started all eight of their league games so far this season, and his experience could be crucial to Scott Parker’s team earning a top two spot in the table.

The 28-year-old is Burnley’s top scorer after eight games, with double the tally of Luca Koleosho in second, who has two to his name.

Brownhill can now target this becoming his most prolific campaign at Turf Moor, with his personal best currently being seven goals during the 2022-23 season.

Burnley league position

The win over Plymouth on Tuesday night moved Burnley up to second in the table, one point behind leaders Sunderland.

The Clarets have earned 17 points from a possible 24, winning five, drawing two and losing one from eight games.

Parker has previous experience gaining promotion to the Premier League with Fulham and Bournemouth, so will be targeting a third return to the top flight this season.

Next up for Burnley is a home game against Preston on 5 October in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Brownhill has stepped up under Scott Parker

Brownhill has excelled so far this season, and is the exact kind of captain any club would want.

The midfielder has provided another big moment, with his goal on Tuesday night bringing the team into the automatic promotion places again.

If Brownhill can continue performing well, and contributing goals, then he could prove decisive in their pursuit of a Premier League place.

The win over Plymouth on Tuesday night was a great example of the kind of win Burnley need to be getting consistently if they’re to compete at the top, as they ground out the victory while not exactly playing at their best as a team.
