Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed the signing of Goncalo Guedes from Valencia, via the club’s official website.

The 25-year-old joins Wolves for £27.5 million and has signed a five-year deal at Molineux.

Bruno Lage saw his team fall to defeat at Leeds United on the opening day, and a major issue was his lack of striking options, with Hee-chan Hwang the only striker available.

With Raul Jimenez sidelined for up to eight games and Fabio Silva out on a season-long loan, the addition of Guedes will provide a major boost for Wolves.

Guedes enjoyed the most productive campaign of his top-flight career last season, recording 13 goals and six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions for Valencia.

The Portuguese is a smart acquisition for Lage’s side as his versatility allows him to feature anywhere across the front three in attack.

Guedes made 178 appearances for Los Che during his five-year stay at the Mestalla Stadium, scoring 36 goals and assisting 30 times.

His move to Wolves allows him to reunite with Lage, who he played under during his days as a youngster in the Benfica academy while becoming the club’s second summer acquisition after Nathan Collins.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “We have been monitoring Goncalo for a long time and are very pleased to welcome him to Wolves.

“He has natural talent and has performed very well across Europe and for his country, and we think he is well suited to the Premier League.

“We are always looking to improve the squad with high quality, and have been patient to make sure we got the right player.

“Goncalo worked with Bruno at Benfica and played with many members of our squad previously, so we’re confident he will settle quickly into the group here.

“Very few transfers are ever straightforward, and this was no exception, with a number of clubs trying to secure the player right up until the last minute.

“Now, we are delighted that Goncalo is a Wolves player and look forward to giving him a warm welcome at Molineux this Saturday.”
