In the latest episode of the That’s Football podcast, Mark Goldbridge delivers the big news Arsenal fans have been waiting for: Viktor Gyokeres is officially an Arsenal player. As Goldbridge put it bluntly, “It’s deal done for Viktor Gyokeres. He will be an Arsenal player.” This signing marks a pivotal moment for Arsenal, a club that many supporters felt missed out last season by not reinforcing their attack.
Goldbridge didn’t hold back when reflecting on Arsenal’s striker situation. He reminded listeners, “Speaking to Arsenal fans last year, many of them felt it was a disgrace that they didn’t get that striker last year.” For Goldbridge, Gyokeres is not just a name, but a transformative player, “I would have loved this player at Manchester United. I’d have took him every day of the week.”
Discussing the deal itself, Goldbridge praised the maturity of the negotiation, noting, “Arsenal and Gyokeres have done a deal that satisfies Sporting… amicable, grown up, mature, and ultimately everybody gets what they want.” Even though it ends on a sour note between Gyokeres and Sporting, Goldbridge was clear, “This is football. This is how it works.”
There has been some debate about Gyokeres’ potential in the Premier League. Goldbridge addressed the doubts directly, saying, “People say there’s limitations to his game… I’ve heard people talk about him being like Lukaku… or that he’s going to flop because it’s the Portuguese league like Darwin Nunez.” However, he firmly rejected these criticisms: “That underestimates and devalues what Gyokeres has done.”
Goldbridge also pointed out Arsenal’s tactical fit, emphasising the service Gyokeres will get, particularly from Bukayo Saka. “If Arsenal service him with three good chances a game, he’s going to score a lot of goals,” he stated confidently. For Goldbridge, this is the signing that “should push them closer to the title.”
Beyond Arsenal, Goldbridge expanded the discussion to the broader Premier League transfer market. He praised Chelsea, saying, “Chelsea deservedly beat the best team in the world, which is PSG,” and highlighted the dominance of English clubs, remarking, “We now have a Super League and it’s benefiting the Premier League massively.”

Liverpool, too, came up in the conversation. Goldbridge speculated on their moves, mentioning, “The agents of Sesko have contacted Liverpool to gauge their interest in him… but I think Ekitike is the player to keep an eye on with Liverpool.”
Looking ahead, Goldbridge was cautiously optimistic about Arsenal’s title chances but recognised the competition. “There will be an expectation that Arsenal win the league now,” he noted, though he added, “That would be massively offensive to the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool and potentially Man City because they’ve had good summers as well.”
He summed up the Premier League landscape by observing, “The stronger the top four get, and they’re going to get stronger every year, it’s going to become increasingly difficult to compete.” For Arsenal, Gyokeres is a major step in that race.
