Goalkeeper swap as Rangers prepare major changes | OneFootball

Rangers are to swap deputy goalkeepers this upcoming window after the final touches on Liam Kelly’s surprise switch to Ibrox were being made, while Robby McCrorie was making his way out of Govan with Aberdeen the likely destination.

McCrorie has definitively given up with Rangers now, aged 26 he’s still only played 7 senior matches for Rangers and knows he needs to move to get first team football, and Aberdeen have reached out with interest in securing him, following their success and profit with his brother Ross.

And Rangers had already made enquiries over Motherwell stopper Kelly, 28, who very much came through Rangers’ youth at the same time as McCrorie and had been groomed as Allan McGregor’s replacement.

But he just didn’t convince, and Jack Butland was brought in instead, who, obviously did.

There is a niggling feeling with Butland’s England cold shoulder that the ex-Stoke stopper may be on the way out himself next month, desperately seeking a return to playing for England and knowing he can’t do that playing in Scotland. That would only be at the right price, however, so that’s a story that is ongoing.

Meaning Rangers’ goalkeeping situation is slightly uncertain, with Butland’s future maybe a fraction unclear, Kelly maybe coming in, McCrorie maybe going out, McLaughlin headed off.

It’s quite the domino effect of movement in there, and like everywhere else at Rangers, it’s a summer of change between the sticks.

We do feel a bit for McCrorie, he never disappointed as a goalkeeper, and will feel a little hard done by not to have broken through and nailed the number one Rangers jersey.

But then Butland really has been very very good.

Best in Rangers’ history? Nope, like everyone else we let ourselves get a little caught up in his impressive first 8 months, and for us, he falls a bit short of Goram and McGregor.

Still been great though, among our best for sure.

McCrorie will be frustrated to have never received a chance to be considered in this way.
