Earlier in the day, a shock collapse from Inter handed Milan a chance to move to the top of the Serie A table, but a well-organized Genoa tried to prevent such a chance.

Poor finishing in the final third was an element for both sides, with only four shots on target combined. Goalkeepers Josep Martínez and Mike Maignan had only one worrisome moment each to endure.

Substitute Rafael Leão made an impact when his diving header was forced over the net by Martínez before Maignan later dove to his right to deny a low drive from Radu Drăgușin.

Then, in the dying moments, drama ensued.

A cross into the box found substitute Christian Pulisic, who controlled the ball, swivelled to create space and drilled the ball into the net.

It looked like it would be all smiles for the visitors until VAR deemed Maignan had committed serious foul play after colliding with Caleb Ekuban and sent him off. With all their substitutes used, Olivier Giroud was forced to play as goalkeeper for Milan.

Albert Guðmundsson’s subsequent free-kick struck the woodwork, and the French striker later saved a late attempt from George Pușcaș to win 1-0.

Between the attempts, Martínez became the second goalkeeper sent off thanks to a second yellow.

Milan, therefore, survived to move to the top of the table two points over Inter while Genoa sit 15th.
