Glasgow Rangers: Cyriel Dessers injured against Viktoria Plzen
Cyriel Dessers suffered an ankle injury during Glasgow Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. The Nigerian striker was substituted in the 54th minute for Danilo and left the pitch wearing a brace.
Dessers picked up the injury in the second leg of the Champions League qualifiers in the Czech Republic. Despite the loss, Rangers advanced to the play-off round thanks to their first-leg advantage (4-2 on aggregate). The Nigerian international felt pain in his ankle after a fall in the second half, which led to a four-minute stoppage before the 30-year-old was helped off the field by the medical staff.
Rangers manager Russell Martin expressed concern about the severity of the injury. The Scottish coach told the press that the injury appears to be serious and that further tests are needed to assess the full extent of the damage.
"It looks serious, he’s wearing a brace now. We’ll have to wait and see over the next few days and get a scan to determine the extent of the injury. We’re keeping our fingers crossed it’s not too bad for our big man," Martin told reporters after the match.
This injury comes at the worst possible time for Dessers and his club. Rangers are set to face Club Brugge next Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs at Ibrox. The 30-year-old striker’s availability for this crucial fixture is now in doubt.
