Celtic FC Women slipped to a 3-0 defeat in their penultimate game of the UEFA Women’s Champions League against Real Madrid.

Despite another resolute performance from the Hoops, first half strike, followed by two late goals was enough to inflict defeat at New Douglas Park.

The game started off in a positive manner for the Celts who were looking to continue their positive performances in Europe.

Other than coming to collect a few crosses in the early stages, Celtic were looking to keep Madrid at bay and create some chances of their own.

On a few occasions, the Ghirls attempted to break on the counter, with Amy Gallacher looking to release both Murphy Agnew and Lucy Ashworth-Clifford.

In the opening stages, Lucy Ashworth-Clifford attempted to float a free-kick into the box, but it was well defended by the visitors.

Despite a spirited first half hour, the away side were ultimately able to open the scoring through Signe Bruun.

As the Spaniards had done in the reverse fixture, it was a stunning strike which would open the scoring, giving Kelsey Daugherty no chance.

After conceding, the Hoops looked to respond straight away as Murphy Agnew broke down the left, before firing the ball across goal. Her delivery looked to heading for Morgan Cross, but the goalkeeper got an important touch on the ball.

Heading into the second half, the Celts kicked it quick and looked to get back on level terms.

Celya Barclais saw a good-looking delivery into the box well cleared at the front post, whilst Morgan Cross was trying to use her pace in behind to expose Madrid.

Despite their best efforts it was the away side who would grab the all-important second goal of the game as Bruun added her second of the night.

After falling two goals behind, the Hoops still pushed forward and created some chances of their own.

Second half substitute Saoirse Noonan had the best opportunity after being introduced into the game, seeing an effort tipped round the post.

As the game entered the closing stages, Real Madrid were able to add a third, with a low finish inside the area.

It wasn’t to be for the Hoops on a cold evening against a strong Real Madrid side. But it was another performance that Elena Sadiku’s side can be proud of.

Next up for the Ghirls, they will look to bounce back as they go on their travels for their final UEFA Women’s Champions League game of the campaign as they take on FC Twente.
