Costa Rican international Gerson Torres was a promising loan addition at América back in 2017 when he was a teenager but was never able to hit the ground running.

Due to a registration error, as he was registered as a foreigner on the U-20 side, Torres was banned from featuring for the first-team in Liga MX matches.

The midfielder, who is still just 22 years old, went back to parent club Herediano and penned a contract extension until 2022 immediately after his spell before being shipped off to Necaxa for the 2018 calendar year.

In a recent interview, Torres reflected on his time at América and explained why things did not go as well as originally hoped.

“Sometimes, I think I went to a very large team at a young age and without having a long football journey beforehand,” he said.

“Playing with América, I had opportunities to start in Copa MX and then Liga MX came. But when I was going to debut, I had a problem with my registration.

“At Necaxa I played more, I had minutes, and I was doing well, but I think that the fact of making bad decisions also influenced this.

“For example, once I was on vacation and I broke my fifth metatarsal. I think for those things I have to blame myself.”

Torres is playing quite well with Herediano and is still one of the most promising talents from Costa Rica. In January, he rejected an offer from Liverpool (Uruguay) to remain at Herediano.
