Germany’s EURO 2024 squad has almost been decided | OneFootball

As reported by Sky Germany, Julian Nagelsmann has almost decided upon the Germany squad that he will take into EURO 2024.

A 2-0 win away to France was followed by a 2-1 victory at home to the Netherlands for Germany in the latest set of international friendlies. As the four-time world champions’ preparations for a home European Championships begin to take a positive turn, the squad that Nagelsmann will take is almost complete.

In an interview on Tuesday evening after Germany’s impressive performances against the Netherlands, Nagelsmann commented on whether he would replace anyone in his squad: “There’s no question: If everyone stays healthy and continues to perform, we definitely won’t swap ten players in the summer. Actually, not five; maybe one or two—plus injured ones.”

As of yet, the only player that is guaranteed to return to the squad is Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané. The 28-year-old was suspended for this set of friendly fixtures, but as confirmed by Nagelsmann, he will make the squad for the summer.

“He is exceptionally good. He knows what it means to play in a home European Championship. He has to integrate himself into this functioning group. I am convinced that Leroy puts his qualities 100 percent at the service of the team. And we won’t miss out on that under any circumstances if he’s healthy.”

It is understood that Sané visited the team before their clash in Frankfurt on Tuesday evening, and he will meet with Nagelsmann to discuss his role within the side. However, this does mean that there are those at Bayern and Borussia Dortmund who will almost certainly miss out.

Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Mats Hummels, Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Brandt, and Niklas Süle all face not making the final shortlist for the tournament. Due to their recent poor form, this set of experienced internationals were overlooked by Nagelsmann, but the head coach admitted that they can still play for their spot within the squad.

“The message to these players is that we have done well now, and they have to give it their all to get on the bandwagon. In the end, they have to be better than anyone else who is there now, in whatever role. That is sure.”

Regardless, Germany appear to have found their feet under Nagelsmann, and while optimism for EURO 2024 was significantly low just a few weeks ago, this squad of players have warmed the hearts of the nation. Despite their lack of experience as a group, there is now a belief that they can claim silverware on home soil.
