Germany vs Scotland Latest Prediction

Germany would’ve been slightly happy with their group following the draw in December but there are still some stumbling blocks that present themselves in Group A. The first comes in the opening match, where Scotland will look to disrupt the party.

Scotland will look to start quickly and this could even see them take the lead but Germany should prove to be too strong for their opponents, especially with the rapid Munich crowd right behind them. It’s not hard to imagine the German defence being breached but the form of Florian Wirtz, Kai Havertz and Leroy Sane should provide enough quality in the final third to see Germany begin their Euro 2024 campaign with a vital three points. A scoreline of 3-1 to Germany seems like a good bet, proving the hosts dominance but delivering them a stark warning that they will need to be a more complete unit defensively.

The opening game of Euro 2024 takes place on June 14, when host nation Germany clash with Scotland at Fußball Arena München, Munich.

As host nation, Germany haven’t had to take part in the qualification process but have played in numerous friendlies over the 18 months as they look to build momentum heading into the tournament. Most recently there have been impressive wins over Netherlands and France have buoyed supporters ahead of the first match but dismal showings at the last three major international tournaments still linger in the memory.

Scotland qualified second in Group A in qualifying, losing just one of their eight games (away to Spain). It was an impressive showing from Steve Clarke’s side, the four points taken from Norway especially. The squad is still a little rough around the edges but, with the best placed third placed teams advancing to the knockout stages, there is some optimism that Scotland might progress from Group A. It doesn’t start easily though, opening the tournament against the German side on home soil.

Germany Latest Team News

There has been somewhat of a resurgence from German players in the final half of the domestic season, with Wirtz returning from injury and finding his form right away and Havertz emerging as a genuine match winner for Arsenal. There are plenty of attacking options for Julian Nagelsmann and he’ll need to find a way to get the best from his younger players.

Defensively the German side still look a little suspect and much depends on the form of Antonio Rudiger, who has become the lynchpin in a back four that has seen a few changes over the past couple of years. Both full back positions haven’t had as much consistency as Nagelsmann would’ve liked, with Benjamin Henrichs, Maxi Mittelstadt, Joshua Kimmich and Jonathan Tah all playing at various points.

Germany’s success in their opening match could well come with how well they cope with Scotland’s midfield press. If they can manage that obstacle, they certainly have the attacking players able to break down the Scottish defence.

Scotland Latest Team News

Scotland might not have the household names in key positions that their opponents will possess on June 14 but there is a certain industry and togetherness that could see Steve Clarke’s side do well.

The likes of Scott McTominay, who may be called upon to present a goal threat, and John McGinn aren’t likely to give up the game at any point but the team does lack a genuine goal threat. Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams will be contested the striking berth this summer but neither has really ever proved themselves consistently on the international stage.

Defensively, Ryan Porteous has emerged as the most important part of the backline, being an ever present in their qualifying campaign. The back line certainly isn’t rock solid though and Scotland are expected to line up with five at the back for the most part.

The last time these two nations met was in the classic encounter at Hampden Park in 2015. Germany came on on top in that match, something that has become the norm in recent years with DFB-Team coming out on the winning side the last three times these sides have taken to the pitch.
