As opposed to the difficult start for the U19 team, Germany eased their way into the knockout stages before the final group stage fixture in the U21 Euros. Following wins over Slovenia and the Czech Republic, the aim now would be to finish top of the group.
In particular, Nick Woltemade has been unstoppable, leading the scoring chart with four goals. Denmark’s William Osula and Portugal’s Chelsea-bound superstar Geovany Quenda followed the tall striker with three. Before the previous tournament, Luca Waldschmidt and Lukas Nmecha finished as top scorers in successive U21 Euros.
If there is any concern for Antonio Di Salvo’s side, they looked shaky in defense after leading 4-0 against the Czech Republic. In the end, Czechia only reduced the score to 4-2, but they had chances to cause what England U19 did against Germany on Tuesday.
Team News
Noah Atubolu could miss the game because of a sore throat, which has caused discomfort to Freiburg’s keeper even before the second match of the group. Di Salvo could also make a few changes to his starting XI after using the same lineup in the first two games of the group.
The defending champions collected four points from the opening two games of the group. After their 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic, Lee Carsley’s side drew goalless against Slovenia on Sunday.
The former Three Lions caretaker coach said they’re expecting a visit from Thomas Tuchel if they progress well in the competition. Thanks to their heavy goal difference advantage over Slovenia, England are well on course to follow Germany in the quarter-finals.
The events of the U19 Euros could also add an interesting element to this fixture. England U19 scored four goals in a space of 11 second-half minutes to deny Germany a five-star victory in a decisive group stage fixture.
Team News
With Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah continues to be linked with Bayer Leverkusen, England’s defense has a player who could join a Bundesliga club this summer. His current teammate Harvey Elliott is the key man in midfield, while Manchester City’s James McAtee is also another name on Bundesliga clubs' wishlists.
Tournament Recap
All fixtures have already been played in two groups, and only two of the eight quarter-final spots remain to be filled. Spain finished ahead of Italy on goal difference in Group A, while Portugal also snatched top spot ahead of France on the same metric.
In Germany’s group, Slovenia will play the Czech Republic with the slight hope of finishing ahead of England. Denmark are already qualified as Group D winner, but all of Ukraine, the Netherlands and Finland stand a chance to join them in the knockout stages.
