The last day of the World Cup group stages produced perhaps the biggest upset of the tournament as two-time champions Germany were sent home. Debutants Morocco have instead punched their ticket into the round of 16, where they will join Colombia from Group H.

Here’s the latest and last roundup of the World Cup group action before we head into the blockbuster knockouts.

Morocco 1-0 Colombia

Securing a slim 1-0 victory over Colombia, Morocco pulled off one of the greatest World Cup upsets of all time. A poor clearance on a penalty gave the debutants the lead just before half-time. The three points from the win were enough to see the Atlas Lionesses leapfrog Germany to take the all-important second qualification spot. After kicking off their maiden tournament with a heavy defeat to the former world champions, progression from the group stage seemed untenable for Reynald Pedros’ side, but the fairytale continues for Morocco.

Topping such a competitive group was arguably beyond Colombia’s wildest dreams heading into their third World Cup. Pulling off a shock win over Germany and taking all three points from South Korea, Colombia have got their campaign off to an almost perfect start.

A difficult meeting with Jamaica awaits in the round of 16, however Colombia would be well within their rights to believe they could see off the Reggae Girlz, given their current form.

South Korea 1-1 Germany

Alongside fairytales for Morocco and Colombia, Germany’s World Cup dreams came crashing down as the two-time champions were held to a draw by South Korea. With Morocco taking all three points from their meeting with Colombia, anything less than a win meant the end of Germany’s hopes of progression from the group stage. Ultimately despite their best efforts, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side were unable to find the winning goal needed to salvage their World Cup hopes.

South Korea’s resilient performance against a persistent German defence was admirable. Breaking up passes and putting their bodies on the line, Colin Bell’s side’s defensive performance kept them in the game throughout periods of intense pressure. Germany will now head back home, recording their worst ever finish at a World Cup in their history.
