Germany are out of the World Cup. This is not a drill. Joachim Löw’s side lost 2-0 to South Korea which sent their tournament ambitions up in smoke.

In the other Group F game, Sweden sensationally beat Mexico 3-0, but the result in the other match meant both went through to the last 16.

South Korea 2-0 Germany

1-0: 90′ Kim

2-0: 90′ Son

Both teams came flying out of the blocks but it was the Koreans who had the best chance early on – a free kick from Jung Wooyoung almost catching out Manuel Neuer.

Slowly though, Joachim Löw’s side got into the game and it was Timo Werner’s effort on the stroke of half time that almost gave them the lead. A rattling volley came crashing off the post, but Die Mannschaft looked to be edging ever closer to a goal.

As the Germans pushed for a winner though, they were leaving all sorts of spaces open at the back but Heung-min Son and co couldn’t seem to take advantage on the counter-attack.

Wave after wave of Korean attack ultimately paid dividends, as right on the stroke of full time, a corner from the left found Kim Younggwon, who poked it home. And they doubled their advantage moments later, as Son raced in to tap into an empty net.

Wow.

Man of the match: Jo Hyeonwoo (South Korea)

The South Korean goalkeeper was superb, and made a number of key saves to dash German hopes.

What happens next?

Unbelievably, Germany are out. The reigning world champions are on their way home and join their South Korean rivals in the departure lounge.

Mexico 0-3 Sweden

0-1: 51′ Augustinsson

0-2 62′ Granqvist

0-3 75′ Alvarez OG

With so much to play for in the group it was perhaps no surprise that both of these sides were truly out to win – and that manifested itself in the opening exchanges with both teams going close to scoring. Sweden had a penalty appeal turned down after a VAR consultation and Guillermo Ochoa was having to be at his acrobatic best.

But the shot-stopper couldn’t do anything about Ludwig Augustinsson’s effort on 51 minutes. His close range volley was expertly taken and gave the Scandinavians the lead.

And they doubled that soon after. Marcus Berg was brought down in the area, and up stepped Andreas Granqvist to smash home from the spot.

The implosion was complete with just 15 minutes remaining when a speculative cross from Sweden was bundled into his own net by Edson Alvarez.

Man of the match: Andreas Granqvist (Sweden)

The Sweden captain was a veritable rock at the back and stepped up when his country needed him to slot home a decisive penalty.
