Following a hard-fought 2-1 win at the San Siro in the first leg, the German National team drew 3-3 against the Italians in the second match, advancing to the Nations League Final Four with 5-4 on aggregate. This match was particularly special for the Borussia Dortmund players in the national squad once they played at Signal Iduna Park, a familiar ground.

However, just like Borussia Dortmund, this match was a rollercoaster of emotions. After a more than dominant first half, in which Die Mannschaft easily beat Italy by 3-nil, the second half showed a completely different facade of a team that had a practically perfect opening half. Ironically, like the BVB from recent times, the Germans underestimated their opponents, and a controlled match was that close to an unexpected overtime.

The homeowners also had VAR in their favor, as the digital assistant helped the referee, Szymon Marciniak, to nullify a penalty provided in the 75th minute to the Italians, which could have given an extra layer of nerves earlier in the match. This second-half performance indeed seemed unlikely for many German fans, but for BVB fans, that display looked as familiar as the Westfalenstadion.
