Borussia Dortmund have now officially confirmed reports surfacing earlier this week concerning Belgian attacker Julien Duranville. On Thursday, the Bundesliga outfit announced that the 19-year-old will undergo surgery and remain out for an indefinite period. This counts as the fifth time Duranville has incurred a serious injury.
Duranville’s injury history has limited him to just 27 first-team appearances over the course of the last two-and-a-half years with BVB. The Dortmund front-office once again finds themselves under pressure to procure a winger this summer. Duranville was slated as the most likely replacement for the departed Jamie Gittens.
“It’s very frustrating that Julien has injured his shoulder in such an unfortunate incident,” Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl. “We all worked hard together last season to improve his physical stability, which makes this setback all the more bitter. We still remain positive and optimistic because Julien is an outstanding talent. We will do everything we can to ensure that his recovery and subsequent reintegration go as smoothly as possible.“
Duranville’s injury might intensify Dortmund’s attempts to acquire the youngster’s Belgian compatriot Johan Bakayoko from PSV Eindhoven. Die Schwarzgelben must nevertheless battle against fellow Westphalian club Bayer Leverkusen in pursuit of the 22-year-old.
