Having returned to Paris after injury-blighted loan spell at Roma, Georginio Wijnaldum has been linked with a permanent move away from the French capital as he enters the final year of his PSG contract.

Speaking to L’Équipe today, though, the Dutch midfielder has indicated that he is keeping his options open, and that his future will be the subject of discussion once he returns from holiday at the end of next month. The former Liverpool points out that there are still “many things that need to be clarified” – notably, the Ligue 1 champions’ next manager, even if Luis Enrique has now emerged as the favourite.

“If they say [they want to keep me], then I’ll stay”, he adds, before going on to explain that he had no regrets about choosing PSG back in 2021, and pointing out that his difficulties on first arriving were down to needing to adapt to a new environment after five years with the Reds. “It was very difficult… I think a player needs to feel wanted at a club, to be shown that they’re counting on him. You need joy as well. That’s what I need.”

The veteran will have only made 14 league appearances this season for the Giallorossi, missing the first half of the season with a tibia fracture and then seeing his campaign cut short by a hamstring issue. Wijnaldum nevertheless looks back on the past season positively, in particular highlighting the influence that José Mourinho has had on him, both on the pitch as well as in his recovery – “I can say that I’ve become a better player since I’ve met him.”
