AC Milan are still searching for consistency on the field, but the management hope to ease matters away from the pitch with some key contract renewals.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) has published an update on each of the negotiations that are ongoing to try and extend the deals of some crucial players.

Maignan talks progress

There have been new talks with Maignan which confirmed the French goalkeeper’s desire to remain with the Rossoneri. The goalkeeper, who turned 29 in the summer, is happy at Milan and remains among the leaders in the squad.

In recent months there has been some interest from abroad but the club never started negotiations to sell him and now, before the end of the season, they want to get him to sign a new contract. The will of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada is to get it done before 2025-26.

The management are planning in advance to avoid a repeat of the Donnarumma, Romagnoli, Kessie and Calhanoglu situations. Maignan currently gets €3.2m net per year and could sign for €5m/yr until 2029.

It would not be the last contract of his career, but all being well it would bring him close to hanging up his gloves. Maignan is attracted to the idea of retiring as a Milan player, as are the directors.

Thaw with Theo

The initial request from Theo Hernandez to extend was €8m net per season, a figure that goes beyond the ceiling set by Milan and the €7m that Rafael Leao currently receives. Contacts with Theo and his entourage continued in recent months, and there has been a meeting.

During the Champions League trip to Madrid for the match against Real, a face-to-face meeting took place between the Rossoneri management and Manuel Garcia Quilon, Hernandez’s agent. The starting point is the common desire to move forward together.

Now a point of agreement must be found on the figures: Theo currently earns €4.5m net per season and would like to get what Leao does, which is why his representatives initially asked for much more than the Portuguese perceives.

Compared to Maignan the amount of work to be done to get to the finish line is greater, but now optimism has grown. A new agreement until 2029 is sought, the Frenchman is happy with the club’s project and perhaps with an extension his own personal form would pick up.

Gabbia and the others

Matteo Gabbia is close to extending his deal with his boyhood club. He currently earns just less than €1m per year and his new salary will be over €2m, while he will be locked down until 2029 as a reward for his consistency.

Tijjani Reijnders – who is under contract until 2028 – would like an increase in salary from the current €1.7m net per season. In recent weeks, the Dutchman’s father and brother have already spoken about negotiations for an extension until 2030.

The club will move to try and satisfy Reijnders, but they have the midfielder tied up for another three and a half years given he only signed last summer. For this reason they will proceed without haste, even if the interest of English clubs could accelerate things.

The will to move forward together is there and an agreement could eventually be found around €3m net per season. There is an air of divorce, however, regarding Davide Calabria and Alessandro Florenzi, both on expiring deals.
