GdS: Milan favour Portuguese candidate as managerial search enters pivotal stage

AC Milan are entering a period of potential uncertainty. Two Serie A games remain, and the Rossoneri have not decided who will be their next manager. However, they are in the final stages, it seems.

Everyone knows the fate of Stefano Pioli, and in all honesty, it has been clear for some time. The 58-year-old has tempted fate several times this season, and now the inevitable awaits. Nevertheless, the merry-go-round of Milan’s managerial situation has not stopped.

For months, the question remained about the future of Pioli, if he would go, followed by when he would go. A constant cycle, which seemed to grow more tedious than its last rotation. Now, the cycle is repeating, with uncertainty in the air, this time, though, it is about his replacement.

As Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes, the Diavolo seem ‘close to the end of the soap opera’, and a managerial decision will soon arrive. The candidates have been whittled down, and only a few remain.

Milan have a clear profile that they want to move forward with, an attack-minded coach who can develop young prospects, and two candidates stand out, fitting these parameters.

Firstly, Paulo Fonseca. The Marseille coach could qualify Lille for the Champions League this weekend, and he has three proposals from his current club, Marseille and then the Rossoneri. Talks have been ongoing, and he is awaiting the decision from Milano.

Alternatively, there is Sergio Conceicao, whose stocks have risen quickly and have held their position rather than falling as some other candidates have. Again, he fits the mould of what the Diavolo want and need.

While Christophe Galtier and Marcelo Gallardo have been spoken of for the job, the progress for both is not as solid as the two Portuguese managers.

The decision lies in the hands of Giorgio Furlani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Geoffrey Moncada, but it seems the Portuguese duo are the market leaders.
