AC Milan have once again found themselves in a very uncertain situation as the calendar year draws to a close, surrounded by poor results and protests.
This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport took a journey into the difficulties that Milan are experiencing this season. Before a ball was kicked they were regarded as a strong squad, with big ambitions, but so far they have disappointed all expectations barring maybe in Europe.
A non-existent style: At his first press conference, Paulo Fonseca had promised that his Milan side would have possession-based and dominant style. As of December 17, however, the Portuguese coach’s revolution has not taken place.
His team play largely ordinary football with a standard system. With Stefano Pioli it was a 4-2-3-1 formation as it is today, but unlike in the past there seems to have been a significant disconnect between the coach and the team.
The Leao mystery: Against Genoa we saw an anonymous performance from Rafael Leao. The winger continues to alternate games where he is decisive and looks stimulated to cause terror with others where he appears almost accepting that he is being marked out of the contest.
So what is the problem? The paper quite strongly declares that it seems as though Leao’s era at Milan has reached a natural end due to wear and tear over six years between player, club and environment.
Inexperienced management: Milan’s decision-making pyramid is not functions because it lacks a strong director with years of experience in the management side of football in the bank. Giorgio Furlani is a corporate CEO, Geoffrey Moncada more of a chief scout and Zlatan Ibrahimovic a rookie.
La Gazzetta point at Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio at Inter as good examples, plus Cristiano Giuntoli of Juventus even if he is under pressure. The Swede’s relationship with the fans is worsening because he seems to think issues can be addressed with jokes.
The summer mercato: Looking back at the business that Milan did to strengthen the squad, there are far more question marks than answers. Strahinja Pavlovic, Emerson Royal, Alvaro Morata, Tammy Abraham and Youssouf Fofana all arrived.
Only the French midfielder seems to have been a successful purchase, given that the former Monaco man is playing the exact role and doing it well. The others have even been absent or inconsistent.
