Gareth Bale has four Champions League titles, one LaLiga win and a Supercopa España to his name.

But his professional career didn’t start until Southampton gave him a chance back in 2006, as a 16-year-old.

Speaking to BT Sport for their ‘What I Wore’ videos, Bale reflected on his time with the Saints and lauded their ‘incredible fans’.

“I remember my first game, I was so nervous,” he told BT Sport. “I felt like I didn’t want to go out on the pitch, to be honest.

“I was 16 and playing really well in the reserve team, but I wasn’t really expecting to be called up to the first team.

“I remember one of the boys my age said ‘I’ve heard that you might be going to the first team’ and I said ‘no, don’t be stupid!’ and I remember having the chat – it was surreal.

“I loved playing for Southampton, the fans are incredible and I will always be in debt to them.”

Bale is expected to end his six-year stay with Real Madrid this summer, with Manchester United said to be pushing for his signature.
