Matteo Gabbia has spoken about the change in head coach that AC Milan have decided to make, admitting the squad take some responsibility too.

Milan played their final game of the calendar year last night and drew 1-1 against AS Roma, but in truth the match was played under a cloud. News broke in the hour before kick-off that Paulo Fonseca was on the verge of being sacked, and he was sent off during the game too.

This morning, official confirmation arrived from the club stating that the Portuguese coach has been relieved of his duties. He is expected to be replaced by his compatriot Sergio Conceicao, as per virtually every major source.

Gabbia spoke to reporters in the mixed zone after the game against Roma and – in addition to assessing the game itself – he was asked about Fonseca’s future. MilanPress relayed his comments, and it is worth noting that as he was speaking the news was not official yet.

Could Fonseca be sacked?

“In the dressing room, we honestly haven’t talked about this, we have no official communications on this. Up until now, I am with the coach, as is the whole team.

“We are disappointed, bitter about the draw. We are not happy with the result of the match, this is what I can say about what happened this evening obviously.

“I don’t have to make these decisions, I have to be by the Mister’s side at all times, and above all the change of coach is a defeat for us too. Consequently, I will never think that there is a need to change the coach, because I feel the first responsible for the situation we are in.

“For me we have to try to do better, to unite and to consolidate. What I can say is about the match, the rest of Milan’s decisions are not made by me.”

The Supercoppa Italiana is next…

“I think the Supercoppa is a great opportunity. We have to reset after the draw tonight and we have to think that these are two games that can allow us to bring home a trophy. We have to take them with energy and strength, train to be ready for this competition that we have to face.”
