From Luka Jovic to Yunus Musah: The doubts and concerns of Milan’s summer signings

Following the lucrative €70m sale of Italian holding midfielder and childhood Rossonerri supporter Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United, Milan were extremely active in the summer market, bringing in a total of ten new recruitments in order to address the soft spots within their squad following last year’s dreadful title defence where they finished top-four by a thread.

Whilst many assumed that the club bolstered their squad heading into this year’s fresh campaign, many concerns have been raised regarding their signings as a result of Milan’s poor run of form in recent time, as they currently sit in third with a total of 22 points, five points behind of league-leaders and cross-city rivals Inter and have failed to record a single win in four matches across all competitions.

Milanese-based journal La Gazzetta dello Sport highlights the grave concerns regarding some of the Rossonerri’s new signings this season based on their form thus far.

Luka Jovic

Without a doubt the former Fiorentina forward has been the most underwhelming signing so far this season. Whilst Milan have past the first ten-games mark of the season, the Serbian international has displayed minimal improvement as he has been poor when playing with his back facing the goal, a lack of mobility and explosiveness, and an inability to cause any danger within the final third of the pitch.

Luka Romero

Since signing for free from the Biancocelesti, many viewed the acquisition of the Argentine as a vital signing as he is an attacking trident and possesses an immense amount of potential given that he is only eighteen years-old. However, in his four appearances for the Rossonerri thus far, Romero has failed to have a major impact on the pitch and hit the ground running, leaving Pioli with no other choice but to maintain him as a third choice on the right flank.

Samuel Chukwueze

The Nigerian international has been unable to leave his mark on the right-hand side like Christian Pulisic as he consistently made poor decisions in the final third, which led to severe mistakes. His moments of brilliance in the attacking phase of the game were extremely rare, casting a major cloud of doubt over him since his arrival from Spanish outfits Villarreal. In nine appearances for Milan, the Nigerian international has failed to record a single assist.

Yunus Musah

Despite the 20-year-old holding midfielder displaying great promise, there is still plenty of work for the former Valencia play-maker as Musah’s tactical discipline and decision making when moving towards goal has been questionable. The young American has only amassed a single assist in 12 matches-played across all competitions.
