Friend reveals: This is how bad things really are for Leroy Sané

Leroy Sané has been playing in severe pain for months. The FC Bayern winger is constantly pushing himself to his physical limits. Sporting director Christoph Freund has now revealed just how bad the German international really is.

Thomas Tuchel already emphasised before the Champions League second leg against Arsenal that Sané is far from being in top shape. The attacking player has been struggling with a pubic bone irritation for some time. This makes the fact that Sané played 89 minutes in yesterday’s 1:0 win against Arsenal all the more astonishing.

After the semi-final, sporting director Christoph Freund gave some shocking insights into Sané’s situation: „It was absolutely borderline. He’s never been able to train. The medical department really did everything they could. Leroy really gritted his teeth and put in a great performance,“ he explained in an interview with Sky Austria.

Bayern need Sané

According to Freund, Sané „hasn’t been able to train for a few weeks“, but he is „somehow back for games like this“.

In view of the personnel situation at the German record champions, Bayern will be reliant on Sané in the coming weeks. Two wingers, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, are currently out of action. The Frenchman’s season is probably over following his muscle bundle injury. Gnabry, on the other hand, could possibly be available again in the CL semi-final against Real Madrid after tearing his muscle fibre.

Tuchel currently only has Mathys Tel, Thomas Müller and Bryan Zaragoza in the squad as possible alternatives.

„It’s not a permanent condition“

TV pundit Dietmar Hamann sounded the alarm about Sané after the Arsenal game: „He did well. When he had his big chance in the second half, he put his foot up after the shot as if he had it in the back of his mind that a pain was about to go through his body,“ emphasised the former Bayern professional. „I would say it can go well for a while. You have to see if the pain is bearable. It’s not a permanent condition. But better a Sane at 80 or 90 per cent than no Sane.“

According to Hamann, Bayern will have to rest the DFB star in the upcoming Bundesliga games: „Bayern are lucky that he doesn’t necessarily have to play in the Bundesliga. I would leave him out until the semi-final if necessary. He should take a break and see if he can get to grips with it. A pain-free Sane at 100 per cent gives you a much better chance of progressing.“
