France manager unhappy with Raphael Varane’s first season at Man Utd | OneFootball

Raphael Varane has endured a tough first season at Manchester United, with much of it blighted by injuries. The 29-year-old has played just 22 games in the Premier League this season, missing 15 through injury.

United have struggled as a whole this season and that has hardly helped his cause but Erik ten Hag will hope to keep the decorated defender injury-free next season – he’s likely to be at the forefront of any plans under the Dutchman.

Varane is a mainstay in the France national team and manager Didier Deschamps has now commented on his first season at Old Trafford, questioning United’s role in his drop in form.

“He has not been at his best but is his club at its best? It is not the happiest period,” Deschamps said after calling him up for next month’s set of international games, according to GFFN.

“But aside from that, Raphaël, he has such a story with us. He has sufficiently demonstrated on what he is capable of doing too. Up to him to turn the recent trend around.”

Varane signed a four-year deal last summer and it’s believed that the club is looking to add another centre-back to their squad, with Ajax defender Jurrien Timber heavily linked with a move.

The 20-year-old has been tipped to be Ajax’s next great import and Ten Hag is an admirer but it remains to be seen whether that interest is followed up with a concrete offer.
