DeAndre Yedlin reveals he was depressed during his time at Tottenham

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender DeAndre Yedlin has revealed that he was suffering with depression during his stint with the North Londoners (h/t ESPN).

Yedlin was one of Mauricio Pochettino’s first signing at Tottenham. The USMNT star signed for our club in 2014 from MLS outfit Seattle Sounders in a deal worth £5m. The full-back stayed on loan for an additional six months with the Sounders, before joining the team.

However, Yedlin struggled to carve out a place in the first-team under Mauricio Pochettino. And having struggled for game time in his first season, the American full-back was sent out on loan to Sunderland. The following summer, Yedlin left the club permanently, joining Newcastle United.

Opening up on his short but unsuccessful stint at our club, the USMNT international has now said that he was depressed during the time and wanted to return to US (h/t ESPN).

“I remember being in my apartment thinking like, ‘I can’t do this, I want to go back. I was depressed. It was a very tough first six months for me.”

Since moving to Newcastle United though, the 26-year-old has managed to get his career back on track. Yedlin has been a first-team regular for the Magpies, although he has missed most of the 2019/20 campaign due to injury.

It isn’t always easy for footballers, especially at a young age, to move to a new country and settle down. They are as susceptible to depression as any normal person. While Yedlin’s time at our club was difficult, it is good to see that he has recovered well and become a regular Premier League footballer.
