Daniel Sturridge gives Harvey Elliott timely advice

The impressive showing not only delighted Liverpool supporters but also drew attention from pundits and former players. Among them was Daniel Sturridge, on punditry duty for Sky Sports.

The striker, who scored 68 goals in 160 appearances in his time on Merseyside, praised the midfielder's ability and backed him to get more goals.

Speaking after the game, Sturridge revealed that he had spoken to Elliott a few weeks prior.

He said: "I had a chat with Harvey Elliott a few weeks ago and I told him to shoot more.

"For me, he has the ability to do it."

Elliott, who has nine assists to his name so far this season, has thrived predominantly playing in a deeper midfield role this season, orchestrating the play and laying on chances for others.

This, according to Sturridge, could be what has been holding him back until now.

"As a younger player you might shy away from it [shooting] with Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and the pressure to feed them,” Sturridge said.

With the goal against Ange Postecoglou's side marking just his fourth goal this season, on Sunday the midfielder demonstrated his undoubted capacity for further development in front of goal.

It remains to be seen if he embraces Sturridge's counsel and what position the Fulham academy graduate will find himself playing when new manager Arne Slot comes in.
