Former Rangers heroes sink into complete oblivion

Article image:Former Rangers heroes sink into complete oblivion

Slightly off topic but the fates of former Rangers forwards Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos couldn’t more summarise where Rangers as a club are today, with those two formerly deemed among the club’s most prized assets.

Indeed, Lille must be absolutely delighted Rangers rejected their £16.5M offer for the Colombian, while Leeds must be chuffed their £8.5M bid for Kent was likewise dismissed.

Rangers lost out on a solid £25M for these two, who left as free agents, and now their careers have completely crumbled into utter oblivion at what should their peak years of football.

Morelos of course has had a complete nightmare – couldn’t find a new club in Europe, couldn’t get a single offer that tempted him, and the only deal worth anything was from the football backwater that is Brazil’s Serie A with Santos, who made him the club’s best-paid player. But of course he was shockingly poor there and injured, not to mention the manager being fired before they were then relegated.

He stayed, willingly, after threats of himself being fired failed to materialise, and now he’s in the literal underbelly of football, not even Brazil’s top flight (which is miles behind the Scottish Premiership in itself, that’s how bad it is), but the country’s second tier which is about League of Ireland level.

Then there’s Kenty, with his stories today, with new Fenebahce manager Jose Mourinho reported spitting hate at the boy, saying:

“I do not want to work with a player profile who does not go on loan and does not play here for half a season.”

No one knows why Kent rejected the loan to Italy, but he did, and he just sat on his fat contract with the Turks instead. And ‘The Special One’ has absolutely zero interest in working with the boy, meaning Kent either just sits on his deal and shows up to training, without a hope of being picked, or… nope, we have nothing else.

Now what’s this got to do with where Rangers are now?

Well, this is the kind of player we had – players with appalling attitude, unprofessional, self-centred, and Rangers currently aren’t in a great place as a club for having had this kind of player for so long.

While Ibrox Noise had a lot more time for Kent than most of the rest of the support, we do recognise that there’s a reason he dressed like Bryan Harvey that night, a reason he ended up in Turkey, and a reason he’s now nowhere – a bad attitude.

We hope that things are becoming more professional at our club, that the players coming in are infinitely-more professional than the ones gone by.

We want to look with pride at their post-Rangers career and say ‘that’s one of ours’ as Celtic can do with a bunch of their illumni.

There’s only one player to have left Rangers, gone on and made something better of themselves and are now a £20M asset player rising in the game, Calvin Bassey, who is only doing better at Fulham after a dismal spell in Holland.

Compare that with the old days, Giovanni off to Arsenal then became a Barca legend. All the players we sold for big money to the Premier League (with varying levels of success).

Now the best we can do aside Shirley is Kamara in the Championship with Leeds and Sakala scoring a few goals in Saudi Arabia.

And then there’s Kent and Morelos…
