After a career best season at the age of 37, Suriname attacker Tjaronn Chery has left Antwerp to return to NEC Nijmegen. The former QPR man scored 18 goals and grabbed seven assists for Antwerp during the 2024/2025 campaign. Even though he is advancing in years, he managed to play 45 games and still looked like he had a few more seasons in him.
Clearly, NEC’s willingness to offer Chery a contract until 2028 was what persuaded him to move back to the Eredivisie. Chery spent the second half of the 2023/2024 season on loan at NEC from Maccabi Haifa and enjoyed a successful short term spell with the club. In 18 games for the side he scored six goals and provided four assists. While a contract until 2028 may seem a bit much, for NEC they will be hoping that Chery can perform at his current level for at least two more seasons.
For Antwerp, they will now need to dip into the transfer market to find someone who can replace the goals they will lose with Chery’s departure.
