Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has warned Gareth Southgate against taking the Manchester United job if he leaves England after the European Championship.

United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had settled on Southgate as his preferred replacement for Erik ten Hag.

The English boss dismissed the ‘completely disrespectful’ rumours linking him to Old Trafford, insisting he is only focused on his current job with the Three Lions.

However, the 53-year-old is unlikely to survive in his current role if he fails to win the upcoming tournament in Germany.

Allardyce, who managed several clubs before an ill-fated one-match reign as England boss in 2016, has advised Southgate against returning to club management with United.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce said: “I’m not so sure if Gareth [Southgate] walked away from the England job that he’d want the job at Manchester United – he’d want a rest!

“He’s feeling the pressure already at England, which is unbelievable at times, and yes it’s alright in the in between periods, but when it’s on, it’s really on.

The difference with United is that it’s on every day, every week, every month, every year – the intrusion is never-ending. I’m not sure he’d want that after all he’s done for England – he certainly wouldn’t want to jump into it straight away.”

Southgate’s England reign has been underwhelming, as he has won just 57 out of 93 matches as manager. He has failed to win a trophy during his time in charge.

They came close to winning the 2020 European Championship when they reached the final at Wembley Stadium, but Italy defeated them on penalties.

His team were then knocked out of the 2022 World Cup after a quarter-final loss against France.

The upcoming European Championship will probably be Southgate’s last chance to win silverware with England.
