Kevin Strootman has officially called time on his career aged 34. The 46-time Netherlands international experienced successful spells with the likes of Marseille, Roma, PSV Eindhoven and Genoa, among other clubs. Strootman anounced the news on Friday morning via social media, keeping his statement short and sweet: ‘Careers come to an end. Thank you football!’

Strootman kicked off his career in the Eredivisie with Sparta Rotterdam, where he featured 84 times before joining Utrecht. PSV Eindhoven came calling and the midfielder went on to lift a KNVB Cup and a Super Cup. Kevin Strootman’s standout spell came with Serie A side AS Roma. He featured 131 times over five seasons before joining Marseille. Strootman most recently played for Genoa and Cagliari.

Kevin Strootman made his debut with the Dutch national team in 2011 during a friendly match against Austria. Over time he became an important player for Oranje, featuring a total of 46 times. Now, his 17-year playing career has come to an end.
