Romero built up the reputation as an incredibly solid backup and became a bit of a cult hero at the club as he racked up numerous clean sheets for his team.

He played an impressive 61 times as backup keeper and was a vital member of the Europa League winning side of 2017, playing in the final against Ajax and typically keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory.

His time at the club came to an end in 2021 when he left for Venezia in Italy before moving back to Argentina to play for Boca Juniors in 2022.

The former United man has made the news however as he was filmed fighting his own fans on Saturday evening after a bitter 0-1 defeat to local rivals River Plate.

In the cauldron of noise that is La Bombonera, according to The Daily Star, “Milton Giménez thought he had nicked a late equaliser – but VAR intervened, deeming there had been a handball in the build-up to the goal” and this caused mass outrage in Boca’s home stadium.

Things got so heated that Romero can be seen attempting to jump into the crowd to confront a fan and after some heated words, was dragged back by his teammates.

Romero was still visibly upset by the altercation and can be seen breaking free and continuing to exchange words with his own supporters before numerous stewards step in to separate the fans and the players.

Speaking to TNT Argentina after the game, Romero apologised for his part in the action and claimed “when the fan insulted me, I couldn’t think at the moment and I lost my mind. He cursed me so hard that he just found me. I was leaving and I lost my mind and I went back to look for him.”

“I offer my apologies to the fan who insulted me because it is his right.”

Romero has since been suspended for two games by Boca Juniors for his role in the incident.

The mood of the Boca Juniors fans will not he helped by their poor league form, having lost four times already this season, while they languish in 11th position in the league.
