Former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna is a shock candidate to be the England national team’s new manager.

The 38 year old worked at United from 2016 until 2021 in a range of positions from under 18s manager to an assistant coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In 2021, he left to become the senior coach at Ipswich Town and has guided them to back-to-back promotions to the Premier League.

The Northern Irishman’s “exciting” attacking set up has impressed many and he was linked to the United, Chelsea and Liverpool jobs before signing a new deal to stay at Portman Road in May.

Therefore many fans and pundits are keen to witness the exciting young manager’s progress in the Premier League as he seems destined to reach the top of football management.

The Sun report that McKenna “is a shock contender for the England job” as “the FA are searching for a successor to Gareth Southgate”.

The Englishman recently resigned after England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

Interestingly, the FA technical director John McDermott, is responsible for drawing up the shortlist and he worked with the Ipswich manager when he was at Tottenham Hotspur.

“McDermott was Spurs’ head of coaching and development and he is a huge fan of what McKenna has achieved.”

Whilst McKenna’s immediate future seems to be in East Anglia after signing a new contract in the summer, he has been tipped by many to become the manager of United at some stage.

Former United forward Louis Saha has already given his backing, claiming that he would be a popular choice amongst the supporters of the club.

United have already reportedly held talks with his representatives and he would surely be keen on the job in the future, when Erik ten Hag eventually does depart.
