Just like last season, Manchester United have had to start the new campaign without a specialist senior left-back with Erik ten Hag playing right-back Diogo Dalot in that position.
The Portuguese is versatile and has done a decent job while new signing Noussair Mazraoui is also capable of playing there. During the Community Shield, Erik ten Hag tried out Lisandro Martinez in that slot as well.
While the Dutchman would have preferred an addition at left-back, INEOS were more focussed on other positions and eventually, the club was left with no money to strengthen in that area.
Even a free agent or loan move did not materialise as plans were shelved till winter. Recently, links appeared with Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu and another blockbuster name has been added to the list by HITC Football.
They have claimed that Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a club of his choice as his current deal expires in 2025.
So far, despite the Bavarian giants’ best attempts, the Canadian has not agreed a new deal and at one point, it seemed destined that he was heading to Real Madrid.
Los Blancos still remain in the lead and have let the full-back know that they want him as a free agent but this wait has allowed several Premier League sides into the race.
“As for Real Madrid, they remain keen on a defender and HITC understands they’re making a move for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, who is now in the final year of his contract in Bavaria.
“HITC understands that Real Madrid are ready to tie down Alphonso Davies to a pre-contract early in the New Year, as they look to fend off interest from the Premier League.
“City and Arsenal are both huge admirers of Davies and are contemplating making him an offer, knowing the chance to sign a player of his quality for nothing is too good to turn down.
“Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all shown an interest in Davies at some point in the last 18-months and could also make an offer.”
The 23-year-old would certainly be a superstar addition to the United backline and could realistically hold down the fort for years to come.
Having beaten Real Madrid in the race for Leny Yoro, there is no reason why INEOS cannot do the same this time around for the five-time Bundesliga champion as well.
But there is a growing realisation that the player’s mind is already in Madrid and that makes a move to Old Trafford highly unlikely.
