Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has reportedly informed Gremio of his intention to retire from football, according to Esportes GZH.
Despite signing a contract until December 2024, knee problems have forced Suarez to hang up his boots.
Suarez established himself as one of the greatest strikers in football during his career.
His time at Gremio saw him make a significant impact, bagging 11 goals and eight assists in 25 matches.
However, fans will not witness the full extent of his abilities in Porto Alegre.
Suarez’s journey to stardom began at Club Nacional. His impressive performances as a young player at the club caught the attention of FC Groningen in Europe.
He set the Eredivisie alight, amassing 15 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances in the Netherlands.
His performances led to a move to Ajax, where he solidified his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising strikers. He recorded 111 goals and 68 assists in 158 games for Ajax.
Liverpool came calling, and Suarez embraced the challenge in England, leaving an indelible mark on the club.
His time at Anfield yielded 82 goals and 46 assists in 133 games before a €75 million transfer to Barcelona.
In Catalonia, Suarez’s prolific goal-scoring continued, as he netted 195 times and provided 113 assists in 283 matches. He later moved to Atletico Madrid before his final stint with Gremio.
Suarez’s trophy cabinet is a testament to his success. His haul includes five La Liga titles, four Spanish Cups and two Spanish Super Cups with Barcelona.
He also won the Champions League with the Catalan side.
On the international stage, Suarez clinched the Copa America with Uruguay and earned numerous individual accolades.
