Former England international Ben Foster has called for Cole Palmer to start England’s Euro 2024 quarter final against Switzerland on Saturday.

The Three Lions haven’t been anywhere near their best in Germany, and were seconds from going out to Slovakia before Jude Bellingham produced a piece of magic in the 95th minute and Harry Kane scored the winner less than a minute into extra time.

Palmer once again made an impact off the bench against Slovakia, and there are again calls for Gareth Southgate to include him in the starting line-up.

Palmer’s superb form for Chelsea, which saw him named Premier League Young Player of the Year, earned him a place in England’s final squad for Euro 2024.

The 22-year-old has had to bide his time in Germany as he was completely overlooked for England’s first two games, before eventually getting his chance against Slovenia in the final group game with an impressive cameo from the bench.

Palmer once again found himself amongst the substitutes against Slovakia, but with England losing Southgate turned to the Chelsea man, and he once again looked good.

Foster has called for Palmer to start against Switzerland.

Pundits and fans have been calling for Palmer to start, and it’s difficult to understand why Southgate is so reluctant to start him.

Foster is one of those who believes Palmer should start against Switzerland, and highlighted the impact he has made for the Three Lions.

“He has to start the next game now it’s as simple as that,” Foster said on his YouTube channel.

“Palmer has to start now. Everybody could see when he came on [against Slovakia]. It’s hard when you haven’t played much football and haven’t been starting.

“I’m very sure that he’s very aware everybody wants him to start. I’m sure of it. He knows the nation wants him to start, so he’ll feel that pressure.

“He came on and the second he got the ball you could tell what his intention was. He was taking players on. He was getting balls into the box.

“He was playing balls across the 18 yard-line. It was completely different to what we had for the first 70 minutes.”

There isn’t much more Palmer can do to warrant a start and he will have to hope Southgate is prepared to make a few changes to his starting eleven, which hasn’t been the case so far.
